So the question is, did people come to protest Furlough Fridays and its impact on school children, or did they really come to see Jack Johnson (above) sing 3 songs? Most people I think were committed to the message of the day's protest. Johnson was an added bonus.

Still I am skeptical about this particular rally since some of the backers are union hacks and liberals, who want to either raid the Hurricane Insurance Fund or have the legislature pass more tax increases.

Hundreds of parents and their children showed up at the State Capitol today for the "Furlough Friday" rally which was a protest against the 17 to 24 day school closure policy adopted by the State of Hawaii, the Dept. of Education and the Hawaii State Teachers Association. The policy now in effect (pending a court injunction) closes schools for several Fridays this academic year as a result of the State's budget shortfall. Parents, students and supporters hate the furloughs and want the Governor, legislature, DOE and HSTA to stop the furloughs and fund education.

It is always scary when people ask for more government funds, because in essence what they are probably asking government to do is get the funds through more taxation. The labor unions have made it no secret that their top proposal to solve any state dilemma is to increase taxes.
